Healthy Babies Healthy Children Inventory
Purpose
The Healthy Babies, Health Children Program (HBHC) is a prevention/early intervention initiative intended to improve the wellbeing and long-term prospects of children. HBHC is a joint Ministry of Health (MOH) and Ministry of Community and Social Services (MCSS) program designed to complement other existing community initiatives. HBHC supports the integration of existing early intervention services in order to maximize the effectiveness of community resources.
One component of the program is the development of an Inventory of Children's Services prenatal to age six in Toronto which will be used to facilitate families being linked to appropriate services. The Inventory of Children's Services should be viewed as a work in progress, reflecting the collaborative efforts of public health and community agencies in the City of Toronto.
Data Collection
Health and social agencies are sent a detailed questionnaire and asked to provide a current description of their services. This data is entered into the Inventory database. Each agency who responds to the questionnaire is sent a print out of the information they provided to review, update and sign as accurate. The composite of agencies and programs listed to date in the Inventory have been reviewed by Community Information Toronto, community agencies, network members and public health staff to identify gaps and omissions. Efforts are ongoing to ensure the Inventory is as complete as possible.
Inclusion
At this stage in the development of the Inventory, the following parameters have been used regarding inclusion. The present Inventory includes agencies or services that:
- are non-profit
- serve families with children 0-6, including
the prenatal period
- serve families, not professionals (this
excludes train the trainers)
- are relevant to the HBHC Program and are
able to accept referrals
- benefit the family and/or child either
directly or indirectly as a result of the
family's involvement with the service
- serve residents of the amalgamated City
of Toronto
